Find my favorite natural beauty and clean living brands for 2021, all rounded up in one convenient blog post.
It’s a new year, and with that usually comes lots of plans to change and do better in our lives. And, one really popular change people are making these days is to be more mindful of the products they are buying and using for their families. This is a question I get asked about all the time over on Instagram, and so, today, I wanted to round up some of my favorite clean living brands to try this year.
Friends, believe me when I tell you this list wasn’t created lightly. No one paid me to write this or to include their products, because, well, I don’t work that way. With that said, I am affiliated with some of these brands, which means I can earn a commission. But rest assured, I only made that decision after purchasing my own items and loving them enough to decide they were worthy of my recommendations here.
So, if you’ve been looking for recommendations on the best clean living brands to try this year, here’s my personal favorites!
Natural Beauty & Clean Living Brands I’m Currently Loving
If you know my family’s story, you know that we’ve been on this journey to cleaner living for over a decade now. In that time, I’ve tried a lot of products from a lot of brands.
I always joke that I hit every extreme along this path. First, I refused to buy anything, ever, because I didn’t trust what was in stores. We DIYed everything from laundry detergent to shampoo (just…no). And then when I got fed up and stressed out trying to keep up, I started buying the most expensive products I could find, because those were bound to be better quality.
Basically what I’m saying is, while I haven’t tried every product out there, I have tried a lot. And hopefully, my experimenting over the years will save you some time now!
So, keep reading for my top recommendations in green beauty, cleaning, wellness, and lifestyle!
My Favorite Clean Beauty Brands
Clean beauty is one of my favorite topics to talk about here on the blog. The day I realized that the products we’re being sold to slather all over our skin are barely regulated just really opened my eyes to the state commercialism in our country. Not only are these products virtually unregulated, but quite often, they include dangerous ingredients that are completely unnecessary. (For example, why does my blush need “fragrance” in it?)
I’ve given lots of great clean beauty recommendations over the years, which you can see here, here, and here. But, today, I’ll share my top favorites. These are brands I recommend all the time. They are effective, easy to find, and affordable-making them more sustainable for the average person trying to do better.
Plant powered cosmetics formulated by a makeup artist and self-proclaimed tree hugger, this line has quality makeup that won’t break the bank. Plus, it’s being sold at retailers like Target, which I love, because it’s helping clean beauty bust into the mainstream market!
I love a good “one-stop-shop” and that’s exactly what Aillea is! All of the “it” natural beauty brands are represented here, which makes it a great place to browse and find new things to try. And, since their standards are pretty strict, you know you can trust what you find on this site.
I absolutely love the price point and accessibility of this brand. I can run into Target for a last minute purchase of some of my favorites, or even order it from Amazon and have it shipped right to my door! Last year, I fell in love with their Extreme Lenth Mascara and blush, and they’re still some of my go-to items.
I discovered Acure because they were the very first natural shampoo that worked for my hair. For years, I dealt with oily buildup and an itchy scalp as I tried brand after brand. Finally, a friend recommended that I try Acure, and I was hooked! Since then, I’ve tried several of their products, all with good results.
My favorite products are their Daily Workout Watermelon and Blood Orange Shampoo and Conditioner and the Radically Rejuvenating Under-Eye Hydrogel Masks.
My Favorite Natural Wellness Brands
The wellness industry has really blown up over the last few years, and while that’s mostly a good thing, it also makes things really confusing. The more popular something gets, the more companies jump on the trend and create products. And, while it’s great to have options, it also opens up a lot of uncertainty.
Which companies actually have our best interests at heart? And which companies are just following the trend to rake in more dough as cheaply as they can?
Well, I can’t answer that exclusively. All I can say is, do your research on a company before you blindly trust their marketing.
All I can do is share a couple of my favorites with you. These are a couple of brands we’ve used regularly. I’ve been pleased with their price points, the information they put out, their transparency, and the effectiveness of their products.
I’ve never been good at taking supplements. I hate taking pills (to the point where my husband laughs at me), and most supplements are huge pills. And, quite honestly, one of my biggest character flaws is that if I don’t like something, I simply won’t do it.
But, if this year taught me anything, it’s that adding a few well-thought-out supplements to stay in peak health is pretty important.
In my search for something I might actually take-and that my kids could take, too- I found Mary Ruth’s.
They offer a wide range of supplements from multi-vitamins and vitamin C, to multi-minerals, to herbal blends to help with focus. And my favorite part is that pretty much everything is in liquid or gummy form!
If you’ve been around this blog a few times, you know my passion for aromatherapy, and how we came to discover Plant Therapy a couple of years ago.
If you’re new, hi! My name is Angie and I’m a total essential oil nerd. I used to recommend another well known brand over here, but found Plant Therapy about 2 years ago. They had me at readily available GCMS reports, and made a life-long customer out of me with free shipping, on-staff aromatherapists, great prices, and super helpful customer service.
Seriously, if you’re interested in essential oils and haven’t given Plant Therapy a shot yet, I highly recommend them. Switching has saved me literally hundreds of dollars a year (probably closer to $1000/year) and I still enjoy great quality essential oils and household products delivered right to my door.
It’s hard to give you my favorites from Plant Therapy, because we buy the majority of our essential oils here. Instead, if you want ideas, you can check out this post of my must-have essential oils that I always keep on hand!
My Favorite Natural Lifestyle and Cleaning Brands
I recently shared the best green cleaners on the market (in my opinion), so, I’m trying really hard not to make this section a repeat of that blog post. So just know, the brands listed here are what I consider my non-negotiable brands for cleaning and lifestyle.
I’m a minimalist at heart and really don’t like to deal with a lot of fuss when it comes to cleaners. I love being able to buy one product and use it all over my house in different ways. The Branch Basics cleaning concentrate is just that product. It can be used as an all-purpose cleaner, bathroom cleaner, window cleaner, or even hand soap! It’s truly an all-in-one product, and I love that. Plus, it’s all plant and mineral based ingredients, and they’re super transparent about what goes into their products.
I recommend grabbing their starter kit that comes with everything they offer for your first order, but if you’re unsure and don’t want to commit, they also offer a sample size that makes one full bottle of cleaner!
I don’t know about you, but where I live, I don’t have access to specialty grocery stores. There’s no Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s or anything like that, so a lot of the cool specialty ingredients that other’s love…simply aren’t available here. At least, not without a drive.
Thrive Market has brought all of those things to my doorstep, though, along with so many other things!
I started ordering from Thrive Market for my specialty groceries, but they also have green cleaners, makeup, essential oils, supplements, and so much more available. The longer I’m a member, the more I find that I can buy through them instead of going to the store.
There is a small membership fee to shop through their site, but I’ve found that to be more than worth it to have my groceries delivered to my door. If you want to learn more about how their service works, you can read my full review here.
You can see our average order through the blog post linked above, but some of my regular purchases include their Thrive brand wild caught pink canned salmon, cashew butter, apple cider vinegar, collagen peptides, and toilet bowl cleaner.
Have you ever thought about what happens to your fancy phone case when it gets a crack or you get bored? I know I hadn’t, until someone brought it up to me.
But, the truth is, most phone cases are plastic or silicone, which means that when we toss them, they just get added to the landfill. Most likely, they’ll outlive us in those landfills. At the rate we buy new phones and new cases these days, that’s a lot of waste.
Pela has taken charge of the situation, though, and now creates 100% compostable cases for your phone. Their site says “once you try our products, you’ll wonder why everything plastic ins’t made out of our materials.” As a Pela Case owner, I can vouch for it!
Originally, I was worried. Would their case be as durable? Would it start to break down over time? But now what I’ve had my case for close to a year, I can vouch for their durability.
I just love how much this company cares about the earth. They really did start a movement, and that makes them worthy of being added to my list of top clean living brands to try this year.
