We’ve all heard it before. “Everything causes cancer these days. There’s no use in trying.” Well, sure. A lot of our conventional products do cause cancer now, but doesn’t that make you mad? Don’t you want to try and do better? I know I do.
In this day and age, I don’t ever expect to be perfect. That doesn’t mean I won’t eliminate the things that I know are causing cancer. I like to control the things I can, so that I can avoid worrying about the things I can’t.
What’s the point in reading ingredients, anyway?
I know a lot of people don’t think reading ingredients is important, but it really is! There are so many hidden ingredients in our daily products that cause problems with our health. Not only cancer, but also hormonal imbalances, neurological problems, lowered immune systems, and so much more!
We can do our best and try to buy from companies that are more natural, but how do we even know what those are? Big companies are really great at marketing, and they know we want more natural products. So, they change a couple of ingredients and add leaves or green lettering to their packages to make it look more natural.
They use words like “pure” and “natural” and “made with natural ingredients.”
It’s up to us to determine the difference. Often, these products are barely better than their toxic counterparts. You can use natural ingredients and still add synthetics at the same time. And many companies do just that, because it’s cheaper than using truly natural ingredients.
So, how do we know what to buy?
Sure, we can look at the ingredients. Luckily, companies are still required to provide that info on the back of their products. But, there are so many ingredients to look out for. It can get really overwhelming. Not to mention the ingredients that are really blanket terms for a whole host of other toxic ingredients. These are terms like “natural flavor,” and “fragrance.” Who even knows what those mean anymore.
There’s got to be a simpler way. We shouldn’t need a chemistry degree to buy safe products.
That’s why we use Think-Dirty.
We’re going to skid right over the fact that the name makes me giggle, and talk about how easy the Think Dirty app is to use.
The app is free for iPhone and Android users, which makes it so accessible to anyone. When I’m shopping, I simply have to scan the barcode (or type in the product name) and it’ll give me a rating of 0-10. If I want more information, I can open it up further and see exactly which ingredients are problematic and why.

This eliminates the need to memorize a huge list of ingredients to avoid, and keeps me from buying into the greenwashing at the same time.
If you’ve been struggling to make the switch to a greener lifestyle and choose more natural products, I suggest checking out Think Dirty! It’s a great way to get started without feeling overwhelmed.
